How to Play: Reading for Detail

Our online description activity uses a "Read and Match" system to build scanning and comprehension skills:

  • Step 1: Read the Prompt – Carefully read the short description provided. Descriptions range from simple phrases to more complex sentences as you progress.
  • Step 2: Compare the Images – Look at the 8 images (or 4 in Easy Mode) and find the one that most accurately fits the description.
  • Step 3: Build a Streak – Get six correct answers in a row to earn a star and bonus points. Use lifelines like "50/50" or "Show Answer" if you get stuck, but be careful—one mistake resets your lifelines!

Comprehensive Vocabulary Sets

Describer is incredibly versatile, featuring 20 different content sets. Each set contains 20-30 items, each with two levels of descriptive difficulty. Available topics include:

  • School Supplies
Nature & Animals

Why Teachers Choose Describer

As a teacher-centric reading tool, Describer is perfect for practicing adjectives and prepositions in a functional way. Because many images in a set are similar, students cannot just "guess"—they must read for specific details like color, size, and action. It provides an excellent transition for students moving from basic vocabulary to Cambridge A1 Movers and A2 Flyers level reading tasks.

Classroom Tips

Use "Easy Mode" for younger learners to reduce the number of visual distractions. For a more challenging lesson, have students write their own "describer" sentences for the images they see. To further expand these skills, pair this game with our Fast English vocabulary game or our Monster Vocab for more foundational practice.
